By 2050, There Will Be More Plastic In The Ocean Than Fish... *Puke*
Ok Adidas, we see you!
Just a few days ago ADIDAS went public with a pledge against plastic – more specifically virgin plastic. The company stated by 2024 their company will only use recycled plastics for their office and clothing lines. All that I have to say is FUCK YEAH ADIDAS.
Polyester Clothes = Plastic
In case you didn’t know, plastic is used in the production of everything from shoes and socks to yoga pants and sports bras – anything that is made from polyester is essentially made from plastic… If you take a look around it’s probably over 50% of the shit you have in your closet. So why should this matter to me?[parallax][/parallax]
Plastic is Killing Our Oceans
There will be more plastic than fish (by weight) in the ocean by 2050… To put that in perspective for you, there are 3,500,000,000,000 fish in the ocean. That number reads three point five trillion fish by the way. If that doesn’t make you want to puke, please check your pulse or better yet walk into a moving bus and do the world a favor by recycling yourself. Just kidding people, we wish death upon no body - have a sense of humor!
Here are a few more plastic facts.
- Global use of plastic has increased 20X over the last 50 years
- Plastic use is forecasted to double over the next 20 years
- Globally, only 14% of plastics are recycled
ADIDAS isn’t the first company to take a major stance against plastic – other mega brands like Starbucks and McDonalds are striving to eliminate unnecessary items like plastic straws by 2020. It’s definitely a start, but as you can see, the people of earth aren’t too good at this whole “recycling thing.” Especially when it comes to plastic. About 58% of all paper is recycled, while 90% of iron and steel is recycled – that’s better, but what the hell man. It’s time to step our game up.
Remember, only 14% of all plastics are recycled
I’ve seen some eye opening shit in the past few months – coastlines flooded with trash, fish tangled up in 6pack containers, stomachs of sharks filled with our waste. The majority of that said waste is, you guessed it... plastic! We have to give props to ADIDAS for stepping up and being one of the first companies to take this stand, but we can’t let them be the last. Now I’m not sitting here telling you guys to go all tree hugger on us (unless you want to take that path, then do you my friend), but when you have the choice to recycle, or buy from a brand who takes the time to do the right thing, please act like person with a soul and do it. Please, spread the awareness and information in this article. It doesn’t have to be our article – we just ask that you go start (lol @keefer + @dlew) a conversation and convey this message. We love you. We also love our planet. #KeepEarthSexy my friends. - Steel P.S. Here are some two brands we support and proudly wear that are helping to clean up the mess we've created. Both pull trash from the ocean as part of their mission.
